David and Nic Sheff at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center
Elmbrook Schools present a visit from David and Nic Sheff, the coauthors of High: Everything You Want to Know About Drugs, Alcohol, and Addiction. This event is cosponsored by Your Choice, offering alcohol and drug prevention education, intervention, and support and REDgen, promoting balance and resiliency in the lives of children and teens. Cosponsor Boswell Book Company will be selling copies of High and other books written by the Sheffs.

David Sheff, author of Beautiful Boy, and Nic Sheff, author of Tweak, have written the ultimate resource for learning about the realities of drugs and alcohol for middle grade readers. Together their memoirs were the source material for the acclaimed film Beautiful Boy. This feature, starring Steve Carrell and Timothée Chalamet, has won awards at four festivals, including the Founder's Award at the Chicago International Film Festival.

This book tells it as it is, with testimonials from peers who have been there and families who have lived through the addiction of a loved one, along with the cold, hard facts about what drugs and alcohol do to our bodies. From how to navigate peer pressure to outlets for stress to the potential consequences for experimenting, Nic and David Sheff lay out the facts so that middle grade readers can educate themselves.

Kirkus reviews noted that High "never assigns blame to users, and it discusses such topics as marijuana legalization and opioid addiction without bias." And Booklist noted that the Sheffs' "powerful story will hopefully inspire young people in similar circumstances to seek help."

This event is free, but registration is required at While kids are welcome at this event, the talk will be targeted to parents, educators, and mental health professionals. Doors will open at 6 pm. A talk from the Sheffs will be followed by a book signing.
